Huge news! The Rubens have confirmed the release of their v awaited third record, three years on from their widely celebrated sophomore album Hoops.
Titled LO LA RU, the album will be a bold step for the beloved Menangle band, which pushes their music into new soundscapes, noting influences from RnB to hip-hop, creating a newfound soulful warmth for the previous indie rock unit.
Sitting alongside their infectious debut album single ‘Million Man‘, the The Rubens have now shared the second cut from LO LA RU. ‘Never Ever (feat. Sarah)‘ is a powerful new soul-pop single, featuring vocals from recent APRA ‘Breakthrough Songwriter’ of the year winner Sarah Aarons. Melodic and harmonious, ‘Never Ever’ is about heartbreak, disappointment and, ultimately, acceptance of love breaking down, lyrically concluding “I think you broke my fucking heart”.
It was an unlikely but extremely successful collaboration between the two, Sarah’s long list of songwriting credits (LDRU/ZEDD & Alessia Cara/Dua Lipa/Jesse Ware) meant that even though The Rubens had almost completely finished their album in Brooklyn with Run The Jewels producers Wilder Zoby and Little Shalimar, a writing session was setup with little expectations.
“We actually thought with the album completed we would be writing a song for someone else. The main chord structure and melody was something I had been fiddling with for a while but couldn’t find the words or story for. After meeting Sarah and having a chat we got stuck into the song, started throwing ideas around. Pretty quickly we realised it needed to be a duet and from there the story started to take shape,” explains songwriter and keyboardist Elliot Margin. Once completed, the band put the song on ice for a few days before they realised just how ‘Rubens’ the track was and it made the final album cut.
Still riding the high from ‘Million Man’ and fresh off the back of a huge global tour, which saw sold out shows in Vancouver, Toronto, New York and London and performances at Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Forum Theatre, the band are ready to deliver LO LA RU.
LO LA RU is out Friday, 29 June and is available to pre-order now.
