Who Is King Princess?
Introducing the newest cool kid on the block – 19 year old singer/songwriter King Princess.
The Brooklyn-raised, L.A.-based pop prodigy burst onto the international scene earlier this year with the release of her debut single ‘1950’. The expertly crafted track is easy-listening sad pop with delicate and unpredictable sonic layers. Piano chords, beachy guitars and King Princess’ soulful voice guide the track through warping bass, robotic vocal harmonies, and tape recording effects. It’s a very mature composition from a teenager who wrote, performed and produced the entire track herself. With lyrics quoted in a tweet by none other than pop royalty Harry Styles, and gaining over 100million streams, it’s safe to say the breakthrough release has the youngster rapidly ascending to the throne.
‘1950’ was also enough to capture the attention of Mark Ronson, who released King Princess’ debut EP Make My Bed as his new label Zelig Records’ first output this June. It’s an accolade worthy of the five tracker that clearly has had years of fine-tuning put into it. King Princess was surrounded by music, growing up in the company of the countless great artists who came through her father’s recording studio Mission Sound. But at just 11 years old she turned down a record deal in favour of finishing school. King Princess’ songcraft must be one of those things that puberty was very kind to, because very rarely will you find a teenager writing as honestly, evocatively and smartly as she does in these slices of pop goodness.
From the groove-inducing yearning of ‘Talia’ to the reflective crooning in ‘Upper West Side’, King Princess is an artist in control of her output. Latest single ‘Holy’ is a sexy and sassy anthem for summer fun. It’s ridiculously catchy and demands repeated listens with its airy vocals, snappy clicks and commanding lyrics. If there’s any let down to King Princess’ debut EP, it’s that it’s all over in 15 minutes.
Having just played a string of sold out shows in the U.S., we’re stoked to have King Princess flying over this way in November for her first ever shows in Australia and New Zealand. The playful and hugely talented young star will be sharing her magical and melancholy tunes in some huge venues, but no doubt tickets will be gone quicker than you can recall what you were doing at 19 years old!
