Hatchie – ‘Sleep’
Brisbane’s freshest starlet Hatchie released the second single from her just announced debut EP Sugar & Spice which will be unveiled next month. ‘Sleep‘ is as dreamy as all of Hatchie’s glittering pop gems, but it’s definitely not going to leave you yawning. With retro synths and Hatchie’s mesmerising harmonies, this sweet love track will put a spring in your step every time it gets stuck in your head. Sugar & Spice is out on Friday 25 May and to celebrate Hatchie is bringing her vibrant tunes down the east coast this July.
ALTA – ‘Now You Want Me’
Melbourne electronic duo ALTA have us moving and feeling with their latest dancefloor single ‘Now You Want Me‘. The catchy minimalist track pairs modulating synths and snappy beats with understated but soulful vocals, making ‘Now You Want Me’ a soft anthem for love, loss and all the everyday sadnesses that can be cured with a good dance sesh. The duo are hitting Splendour In The Grass this July, and with any luck we’ll hear more from them soon.
CHVRCHES – ‘Miracle’
Scottish electronic powerhouse CHVRCHES dropped a sizzling single that they described as “CHVRCHES on steroids”. Produced by Steve Mac (Ed Sheeran ‘Shape Of You’), ‘Miracle‘ is chock full of huge synths, angelic melodies and gritty samples. The beats are pounding in this explosive soundscape that sounds ready to blow your speakers. CHVRCHES are hitting our shores this July for Splendour In The Grass, and in the meantime, their highly anticipated new album Love Is Dead is out on Friday 25 May.
Esoterik – ‘Wide Awake’
Ahead of releasing his debut EP My Astral Plane next month, Esoterik (one third of Aussie hip-hop powerhouse Bliss & Eso) has gifted us with a super catchy track about rising above challenges. ‘Wide Awake‘ is blessed with the additions of imbi the girl’s sweet raspy vocals and Indiana rapper Spazzy D’s laid back rhymes. Complete with an inspiring pep talk at the end, this feel good track is as healing as it is fierce. My Astral Plane drops real soon, on Friday 11 May.
The Rubens – ‘Never Ever’
The Rubens have released a second glimpse at their highly anticipated follow up to huge 2015 album Hoops. ‘Never Ever‘ continues the band’s new soul sound, enlisting award winning songwriter Sarah Aarons to create an infectious tune about heartbreak, disappointment and, ultimately, acceptance of love breaking down. With blatantly honest lyrics like the closing line “I think you broke my fucking heart”, the track is surprisingly upbeat thanks to the ridiculously catchy melodies and building choruses. The Ruben’s third album LO LA RU is out on Friday 29 June.
Middle Kids – ‘On My Knees’
Sydney trio Middle Kids are just about to release their much anticipated debut album and to celebrate they treated us to another vibrant single. ‘On My Knees‘ is a dynamic track, that simultaneously highlights Hannah Joy’s special voice and builds a big wall of indie rock sound. With an energetic message about overcoming challenges, the song celebrates growing stronger for all your troubles. Lost Friends is set to drop this Friday 4 May and the band are touring Australia from next week.
Mansionair – ‘Violet City’
Sydney ex-pats Mansionair shared an intense new single ‘Violet City‘, their first new track since relocating to the US in March. With a kaleidoscope of unexpected sounds including eastern strings and crushing electric bass, this latest offering evokes the alienation that comes with moving to a new city. Jack Froggatt’s vocals are delicate and vulnerable while the nocturnal soundtrack is formidably expansive. It’s an enticing follow-up to last year’s cinematic single ‘Astronaut (Something About Your Love)‘.
DMA’S – ‘Break Me’
Sydney legends DMA’S released a fourth single from their brilliant, just-dropped sophomore record For Now. ‘Break Me‘ is as hard-hitting as it is inspiring, with Tommy O’Dell proclaiming “You won’t break us” over a massive wall of fuzzed-out guitars. Complete with moody verses, punchy vocals, tight rhythms and psychedelic riffs, it’s the perfect example of the band’s energetic guitar pop. For Now is out now and DMA’S are touring the country this June.
